Solid Waste Landfill Design and Construction Services

Gannett Fleming was selected to redesign portions of a 75-acre, 500 tpd sanitary landfill. Fifty-three acres of disposal area, an average of 10 feet across the site, were lowered, resulting in a savings of approximately 800,000 cubic yards of cover material over the previous design. Our firm performed groundwater modeling to identify and quantify seasonal high groundwater elevations beneath the landfill to establish the design elevation for the liner system. The design included an internal sump configuration for leachate collection that precluded the need to penetrate the liner system. This non-penetration cell design, one of the first in the country, was awarded the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) Landfill Excellence Award in 1992. A sophisticated method of joining the existing PVC/Hypalon liners to the new HDPE liner system had to be devised. Gannett Fleming provided construction management for the project.
