Solid Waste Industry Implements Safety Measures To 'Beat the Heat' This Summer

Chicago, IL - Record breaking temperatures in the Midwest this summer has led The National Solid Wastes Management Association – Illinois Chapter (NSWMA-IL) members to implement safety measurements ensuring the heat does not negatively impact its employees. Drivers spend the majority of their shifts outdoors dealing with contaminants and operations often impacted by severe heat. NSWMA-IL members have implemented a series of safety measures internally for their crews, as well as modifying operating procedures to ensure safety in controlling possible hazards surrounding the collection of waste materials during times of high heat.

Safety Measures Implemented by NSWMA-IL Members Include:

  • Educational programs are offered that provide information about heat effects on the body—trouble signs to look for and best hydration practices;
  • All necessary measures are taken with local towns to allow drivers to adjust collection routes during non “peak” temperature hour;
  • Water and electrolyte rich drinks are provided for all drivers
  • Ice machines are kept on-site to keep drivers’ beverages cool at all times
  • Ultra-absorbent headbands and neckbands are provided to help drivers keep cool for extended periods of time during their routes

"Keeping our drivers safe is of the utmost importance to our members," said Robert Pfister Chairman of NSWMA-IL. "With temperatures as high as they’ve been this summer, navigating the collection of the materials our drivers handle can get very dangerous and we are making sure all necessary measures are being implemented to keep everyone safe and healthy."
