What is the Food Waste Ban?
35 million tons of food waste reach landfills and incinerators in the US each year. That’s more than 10% of the weight of the entire 2012 human population. Food waste makes up 14.5% of all municipal solid waste in the US but only 2% of municipal solid waste recovery.

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Health has created a food waste ban that will combat this. The ban will become effective in October 2014 and impact over 1,700 businesses and institutions state wide. The ban will result in those companies repurposing waste by donating it to people or animals in need. If no longer edible, the ban requires that food waste be delivered to energy-generating or composting facilities. The ban will help the Commonwealth reach its goals to reduce its waste stream by 30 percent by 2020 and 80 percent by 2050.
