ACHMM'S National Overview Course Renamed To More Accurately Convey Its Significance

Bethesda, MD - To convey its importance more accurately to the public and environmental, health, safety and security (EHS/S) professionals, the Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers (ACHMM) has renamed its national overview course the "Essentials of Hazardous Materials Management," announced ACHMM President Laureen McMurray Boyle, CHMM.

"Through a new name for the overview course, ACHMM is communicating more clearly to its members as well as the general public the critical role the hazardous materials management profession plays in the safety or our environment and the security of our communities and nation," McMurray Boyle said.

"ACHMM chapters have been hosting this valuable preparatory course for many years. It is an unmatched, excellent educational resource for professionals in the hazardous materials management field—both those just starting their careers and those with well-established careers," said McMurray Boyle, who added that the name change from the "National Overview Course" is effective immediately.

The newly re-minted course provides an introduction or refresher to the hazardous materials management industry, depending on career stage. It is used by hazardous materials professionals to prepare for the CHMM certification exam or to earn required CHMM designation Certificate Maintenance Points (CMPs). Industry professional who are not certified but want to broaden or maintain their knowledge base also attend the course.

The Essentials of Hazardous Materials Management provides instruction about relevant laws and regulations, compliance standards as well as state-of-the- art technologies and best practices used in the EHS/S field.

Among the topics on which the course provides instruction are:

*hazardous waste treatment, storage and disposal; *hazardous material storage; *radioactive materials; *workplace safety; *hazards assessment and communication; *biological effects of hazardous materials; and *toxicology.

The Essentials of Hazardous Materials Management is endorsed by the Department of Energy's National Environmental Training Office. Additionally, ACHMM has petitioned the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management to award Continuing Education Units (CEUs) to CHMM designation holders who take the course.
