Schaumburg, IL and Chicago, IL -- Gas Technology Products LLC (GTP) and Landfills+ Inc. have entered into an alliance dedicated to designing and installing environmentally friendly systems for the recovery, treatment and use of landfill gas.

According to Gary Nagl, vice president/general manager of GTP, "The alliance between GTP and Landfills+ Inc. will result in a dynamic approach to landfill gas regulatory issues and to the installation of unique gas recovery systems, which have an economic return.

"Today there are two trends that are making landfill gas emissions more of an issue. One is the desire of landfill operators to become an environmentally friendly neighbor. And the second is that traditional municipal waste landfills are beginning to accept Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste to increase their revenue, which unfortunately increases the hydrogen sulfide (H2S) emissions from the landfill."

Dr. Jean Bogner, president of Landfills+ Inc, Wheaton, Ill. confirms, "The first trend means that, increasingly, mature landfills that have collected C&D waste in the past have to install sulfur abatement technology. Depending on the size of the landfill and the sulfur load, this sulfur abatement technology can be as simple as installing H2S scavenging systems on landfill vents to multi-million dollar process plants that remove and convert up to greater than 10 tons per day of hydrogen sulfide to sulfur."

"The second trend is more prevalent, and perhaps the larger and emerging issue. Many landfills that have traditionally taken only municipal waste have started taking C&D waste for additional revenue. This results in an immediate new revenue stream but a future liability and expense as the mechanisms that produce hydrogen sulfide are introduced into the landfill, resulting in commercial, technical and regulatory challenges."

Landfills+ Inc. is a landfill gas consulting company involved in planning, problem solving and process research on landfill gas issues. Dr. Bogner was previously employed at Argonne and did some of the pioneering work on the uses of landfill gas. Dr. Bogner is also an adjunct associate professor with the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois in Chicago.
