SICK, Inc. Height Profile Sensor uses a two-dimensional receptor array made up of 32 x 32 pixel image components to evaluate data. A line-shaped beam of light (monitoring length: 8 mm) is directed, at a fixed angle, onto the objects to be counted. As the line of light falls across the edge of the object, the line is broken. The sensor uses the angle of the light beam and the measurement of the broken line to calculate the height of the object.

All height changes cause a lateral displacement of the band of light to the two-dimensional array and is recorded. Because the product uses differential measurements, height fluctuations in the conveyor belt will not affect the count. The sensor requires no separate lighting and is immune to ambient light.
