Magherafelt District Council Invests In 'In-Vessel Composting' Technology
This will be the sixteenth site that VCU Europa has been contracted to build in the UK & Ireland to-date, and was chosen by the Council as the preferred technology due to the consistently excellent results that VCU sites have already delivered; proving the technology's unrivaled ability to assist the Council in achieving its recycling goals.
UK-based VCU Europa will supply its animal by-product accredited vertical in-vessel composting system to process over 2,500 tonnes of organic material each year. Operated by the Council, the facility will be taking in meat inclusive catering waste and green waste from the Council's source separated brown bin scheme.
"This will be the first site where our technology is being utilised as a double barrier system to meet the UK catering waste regulations," says Carl Beck, European Business Manger, VCU Europa. "With our proven track record of meeting the European regulations and experience gained from building over 27 sites worldwide, we are ideally and uniquely placed to meet this exciting challenge. We expect a lot of interest in the site from other municipal bodies across Europe and look forward to showcasing the site later this year."
John McLaughlin, Chief Executive of the Council says: "By purchasing VCU technology, we have chosen an established brand that is already accredited to meet the Animal By-production Regulations. This gives us undoubted confidence that regulatory compliance will be met and this will allow us to move quickly to the forefront in achieving our recycling goals."
In order to meet its recovery target of 25% of household waste by the end of 2005, Magherafelt intends to expand its ‘Brown Bin' service to cover 7,500 households by that time.
By diverting waste from landfill, and investing in the accredited VCU technology, Magherafelt Council will ensure that recycling targets are met by the most effective means currently on offer.
