Onslow Landfill Closing
The Onslow County landfill (FL) officially closes on December 31, making way for a new subtitle D landfill.
The new 68-acre landfill, as proposed, is on a 160-acre tract adjacent to and north of the existing facility, approximately seven miles northwest of Jacksonville. The new facility, which will mostly be used for municipal waste, is scheduled for building in six phases, each lasting about five years. The entire first phase is to be completed by September 1998. Because the landfill is being lined, the county expects to dispose of construction and demolition waste, according to county documents.
Reportedly, the Army Corps of Engineers has agreed to allow the county to create additional wetlands on the existing landfill. They will replace on an acre-by-acre basis the wetlands to be eliminated by the construction of the new landfill.
