Philippine president signs Solid Waste Management Act

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has signed into law Republic Act No. 9003 or the Solid Waste Management Act, which is expected to alleviate the garbage crisis in Metro Manila. "This new law seeks to address the major causes of the current garbage crisis in Metro Manila and to arrest similar problems throughout the country," President Macapagal-Arroyo said in her speech during the signing ceremony. She said the implementation of the law is expected to significantly reduce the volume of waste residual for final disposal and thus alleviate the pressures on the capacity of Metro Manila's sanitary landfills.
