The reagent formulation for the measurement of phenol, ortho-substituted, and meta-substituted phenols in water
CHEMetrics, Inc.agent formulation for the measurement of phenol, ortho-substituted, and meta-substituted phenols in water comes packaged in a self-filling ampoule. The Phenol Vacu-vials ampoules can be used in almost every visible range spectrophotometer on the market, according to the company.

The ampoules offer a broad testing range, made possible by manipulating the 4-aminoantipyrine chemistry. Each ampoule contains a unit dose of liquid reagent sealed under vacuum. This packaging eliminates the need to measure and mix chemicals, simplifies testing, and virtually eliminates reagent spoilage.

To perform a test, the user snaps off the tip of an ampoule below the surface of the sample. When the tip is broken, the sample is automatically drawn into the ampoule, where it reacts with potassium ferricyanide under alkaline conditions and forms a red color. The intensity of the red color is directly proportional to the amount of phenol in the sample- under Beer's Law. The ampoule is then inserted into an instrument, and results are displayed in parts-per-million (ppm).

According to the manufacturer, the ampoules offer a broad and simplified testing range. Total analysis time is approximately 2 minutes. Testing range is 0-16 ppm with a method detection time (MDL) of 0.5 ppm. Calibration factors and tables for several popular instrument lines are included with each kit.
