Single-stream or commingled collection has recently gained popularity due to collection savings realized by waste hauling companies. This collection method allows single bin trucks to be used for hauling, dramatically reducing the number of vehicles required to service accounts. Fewer collection trucks results in less maintenance, reduced fuel expenditures and fewer drivers.

Bulk Handling Systems (BHS) is the leading designer and supplier of single-stream processing equipment, with 13 systems currently operating throughout North America and Europe. Before the BHS equipment was introduced to the industry, large scale single-stream collection was not implemented due to the labor intensive task of sorting the recyclables at the material recovery facility. New, innovative technology developed by BHS allows large throughput volumes to be processed mechanically at the material recovery facility. Separation efficiencies can exceed 95 percent.

Depending on material composition and throughput requirements, the system may include the B.H.S. NewSorter®, B.H.S. Hi-Grader™ (Patent Pending), or a combination of both. The equipment mechanically separates the incoming single-stream into two material streams: Fiber and Containers. Each material stream is then conveyed to its respective processing area for further sorting
