Waste Industries, Inc. today announced the acquisition of Safeguard Landfill Management, Inc. located in Atlanta, GA. Safeguard is the owner of a greenfield construction and demolition landfill in Atlanta, which opened for business June 20, 2000.

The landfill is a 108-acre site located in Fulton County, GA with initial permitted capacity of 3.7 million cubic yards of air space. The site has immediate air space expansion potential of over 1 million cubic yards through engineering and permitting changes. It is anticipated the landfill will have annual revenues of approximately $2.8 million of which approximately $500,000 is generated from the company's own facilities. The company expects to recognize approximately $1.2 million in 2000.

Thomas C. (Chris) Cannon, Waste Industries' Vice President of Georgia/Tennessee Valley Region, stated, "Atlanta is the fastest growing market in the southeastern United States. We have a significant presence in the Atlanta market through our residential and commercial hauling units. With the acquisition of the Safeguard Landfill in south Atlanta, not only will we be able to internalize our own waste volumes but we will be in a position to serve the waste disposal needs of the most rapidly growing areas of the Atlanta market served by other haulers. The site is well located, well engineered, and this acquisition represents a strategic move in this dynamic market."
